October is here and it’s a beautiful time of year in Savannah, Georgia. It’s time for unique events and plenty of things to do for adults, kids and the entire family. Here are five of the top things to do in Savannah throughout October
Just around the corner, Oktoberfest will provide plenty of fun for those 21 and older. This will mark the 33rd year for the Oktoberfest on River Street and plenty of other Oktoberfest events will also be held throughout the city.
The main event on River Street will include a beer garden, Weiner dog race, plenty of German food and so much more. Enjoy live entertainment, arts & crafts and fireworks throughout the event, as well.
Oktoberfest will be held at the Rousakis Riverfront Plaza from October 7th to October 9th. It will run from 4pm to 11pm on Friday, from 10am to 11pm on Saturday and from 11am to 7pm on Sunday. Fireworks will be held on Friday at 9:30pm and the Weiner Dog Races will be held on October 8th.
Yellow Fever in Savannah 1820
A new historical recreation of the outbreak of yellow fever will be held from 7:30pm to 8:45pm every Friday and Saturday throughout October, except the 15th. This event will be held at the Davenport House Museum.
Many of the coastal cities throughout the United States suffered from outbreaks of yellow fever in 1820. It was widespread throughout Savannah and this recreation will show the history of this time. It will also provide an emphasis on the first female physician in Georgia, Mary Lavinder.
This event is not suitable for children under 12 years of age and you do need to be able to walk up and down stairs and throughout candlelit rooms.
Great Ogeechee Seafood Festival
A festival with annual attendance of about 35,000, the Great Ogeechee Seafood Festival is one of the most popular things to do in October. Come out and enjoy some of the finest coastal seafood, incredible desserts and even kettle corn prepared by the Boy Scouts.
More than 50 arts & crafts booths will be on hand, along with other businesses from around town. Of course, live entertainment will also be provided.
The festival will be held from October 14th to 16th at the JF Gregory Park Pavilion.
Halloween Hike at Oatland Island Wildlife Center
A safe, fun, not-so-scary Halloween hike will be held at the Oatland Island Wildlife Center on October 21st and 22nd. This hike will run from 5pm to 8pm and will include trick-or-treating throughout the forest. Many friendly animal characters will be on hand and Mother Goose will even provide some of her favorite rhymes.
The hike will also include spooky crafts, face painting and many other activities. The last hike will leave at 8pm each night.
The Nightmare on Congress Street Charity Bar Crawl
An event perfect for adults, The Nightmare on Congress Street Charity Bar Crawl will start at 2pm on October 29th. The crawl will cover some of the creepiest and scariest bars along the eeriest strip in Savannah. Enjoy drink specials and crawling at your own pace.
The first 250 participants to complete the scorecard will receive a free T-shirt. There will also be $2,500 in prizes given away for the costume contest.
